World Premiere Performances

One of the best parts about being a percussionist and playing contemporary music is helping composers discover their voice in percussion writing! Here are some of the pieces that I have premiered!

“Umxhentso” by Nkululeko Zungu

Nkululeko says about the piece that: “Umxhentso is a work for solo percussion whose rhythmic content is derived from the dance style with similar name of the IsiXhosa tribe of South Africa. This work is a commission for Bryan Wysocki.”

Performed live at the atlcmc launch party 11/4/23

“Plastic Hugs. Emptiness” by Maria del Pilar Miralles Castillo

This piece was originally commissioned by Curtis and I as the duo Duoctane, but received its world premiere with my bassoon and percussion duo with Cassandra Roache, Honk and Bonk!

Performed live at the 2023 Music by Women Festival in Columbus, MS

“Moon Face, Tiger Stripes” by Daniel Karcher, in collaboration with Tifara Brown

A powerful piece of spoken word performance, paired with sax quartet, percussion, and electronics. Created as part of the Athens Hip-Hop Harmonic project.

“khaioh” by Richard An

Curtis and I really love playing this piece because of all the funky rhythms! In this piece for saxophone and hi-hat, Richard explores the timbres of breathing through the saxophone, bowed cymbal, Dilla beats, and Nerds candy inside the hi-hat!

“Opalized Ammonite” by Kathryn Koopman

This piece is just pure fun to play! Between the improvised section in the middle and the fun grooves in the drum set part, this piece is so much fun!

“Supergravity” by Kevin Kay

I have premiered a few of Kevin’s works, and they’re always fun to put together. This one deals with the mathematical relationships between rhythm and pitch. Kevin calls this piece an “action painting,” see if you can hear why!

“One Person’s Trash” by Bryan Wysocki for speaking vibraphonist

Well of course, performing and premiering my own pieces counts! This piece was originally for speaking violist, but I thought it would be fun to do on vibraphone too!

“enSnare” by Kevin Kay for snare and electronics

The world premiere of this piece was not recorded, but this recording from my home studio is a great version of the piece!

“Groove Permuter” by Richard An for two percussionist and two pianists

Richard An and I were at the Yarn/Wire Summer Institute together, and he played on my piece “what/is/what/was” and I played on his piece “Groove Permuter.” Try to listen to all the ways Richard permeates the groove!

“…pour Peter Hujar" by Drew Smith for four percussionists

Premiered at the SoundSCAPE New Music Exchange, this piece was fun to put together because I got to play some drum set in a chamber music setting!

“The Earth Refused to Catch My Fall” by Amber Vistein for four percussionists

This piece was also premiered at the SoundSCAPE New Music Exchange, and try to listen to the timpani in this piece. Each percussionist has one, but the way they’re spread out makes them sound completely different!

“topography 1” by Steven Hixson for violin, cello, and whirly tubes

Sometimes composers write for instruments, sometimes they write for objects, and sometimes they write for toys! This piece for strings and whirly tube was a great example of performing a new-to-me instrument.
