Commissions & Consortiums

If you’re looking to make brand new, never heard before music, this is the place to be!

What is commissioning?

Commissioning is when a performer or ensemble or organization pays a composer to write a new piece of music!

Why commission a new work?

One of the perks of being a living musician is that we have the ability to talk about music with the composer. It’s one of the most direct ways we can add new ideas to the repertoire, whether that be for an ensemble or a specific instrument!

  • Do you play an instrument that desperately needs new repertoire?

  • Are you tired of the old works and want to do something no one else has ever done before?

  • Are you looking for a new piece of music that’s written just for you?

Then commissioning a new work might be for you!

What is a consortium?

When a group of people ask a composer to write a new work for all of them! There’s usually a leader, either a person or ensemble, and the leader usually finds other people similar to themselves (similar instrument or ensemble) who would like to work together to commission the composer.

Why join or start a consortium?

Start:

  • You get exclusive rights to record and perform the work before everyone else does! Usually the Leader has the right of first performance and recording, which means they’re the only ones who get to perform the new piece! Then everyone who joins the consortium gets to record or perform the work before it gets released out to the public.

  • They’ll have the most say in the piece! Usually the Leader will work the closest with the composer, which means they’ll have the biggest input as to how the piece turns out.

Join:

  • It’s significantly cheaper for the individual! Instead of paying for the composers fee by yourself, you can buy in and be a part of the process at a much lower cost.

  • You’ll have a network of peers that are also working on and learning the piece together. That way the composer and the consortium can ask questions of each other, making the finished work more accommodating of everyone.
